Gators Eye Bounce Back at NCAA South Regional Championships
Thursday, November 14, 2019 | Cross Country
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Just about a month ago, the Gators swept first-place team finishes, including a Jessica Pascoe first-place finish, at the Apalachee Regional Park for the FSU Invitational on Oct. 11. After a substandard finish to the SEC Championships in Lexington, Ky. on Nov. 1, the Florida men's and women's cross country teams look to replicate those results from October in traveling to Tallahassee again for the NCAA South Regional Championships, held at the Apalachee Regional Park, on Friday, Nov. 15.
The women's 6k race is scheduled to start the morning at 8:30 a.m., followed by the men's 10k race after at 9:30 a.m. Tomorrow's race will be available for livestream Friday morning via FloTrack, beginning at 8:28 a.m.
The top two men's and women's teams and the top four individuals from each race not a member of the two top teams and finishing in the top 25 will advance to the NCAA Championships, Nov. 23 in Terre Haute, Ind.
The Florida women strive to make a consecutive NCAA Championships appearance after notching their first appearance since 2012 last year with a strong second-place performance at the Regional Championships. Jessica Pascoe, a First Team All-SEC performer, will look to lead the way for the Gators, with her sights on her fifth individual title of the year upon a seventh-place finish at SEC Championships. At last season's meet, Pascoe notched a runner-up finish in the women's 6k, nabbing All-South Region honors upon the performance.
The Gators will also receive contributions from returners Elisabeth Bergh and Imogen Barrett, a pair of All-South Region performers who finished within the top-25 (6th & 21st respectively) in last year's meet to aid Florida's NCAA qualification. The likes of Payton Capes-Davis, Madison Morse, Pamela O'Brien, Maria Fernandez and Emily Culley round out the Gators depth for Friday's competition, as all look to carry over personal-best performances from their last performance at the Apalachee Regional Park in October.
The men are in pursuit of their first NCAA Championships appearance since 2013 and look to improve on an 11th-place finish at last year's meet. The meet serves at the first 10k the men have run this season since last year's NCAA South Regional Championships. Colin Schaefer, Nick Deal, Blake Lowery and Trevor Foley return as contributors for the Gators in Friday's 10k race, as all share experience competing in last season's meet.
Schaefer led the way for the Gators last season, with a 34th-place finish, though, Florida will also receive contributions this weekend from redshirt-senior Jack Guyton, who emerged at the Gators' top-finisher (17th) and most recent 8k record-holder (23:26.3) at SEC Championships in Lexington, Ky. on Nov. 1, in his first 10k race since 2016. Redshirt junior Marshall Dillon also joins the Gators for his first 10k race since 2017, while freshman Hugh Brittenham rounds out the Florida men competing in his first collegiate 10k race as a member of the blue and orange.
Florida, slotted sixth on the men's side and 12th on the women's side in the South Region rankings, will face a plethora of regionally-ranked competition in Friday's Regional Championships, headlined by nationally-ranked No. 11 Ole Miss, No. 15 Middle Tennessee State and No. 28 Alabama on the men's side and No. 12 Florida State and No. 27 Ole Miss on the women's side.
