Gator Gymnasts Earn First Win Of Season

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The No. 9 University of Florida gymnastics team claimed a decisive 194.40-190.50 win Friday in the Gatorade Classic against North Carolina State in front of a Stephen C. O'Connell Center crowd of 5,168. The win avenges a 1994 loss the Gators suffered in Raleigh, N.C., and evens UF's 1996 season record to 1-1.

O'Connell Center crowd of 5,168. The win avenges a 1994 loss the Gators suffered in Raleigh, N.C., and evens UF's 1996 season record to 1-1.
 
The Gators were led Friday by senior All-American Kristen Guise of Coral Springs, who claimed the all-around title with a total of 39.55 -- the fourth-highest total in school history. The win was the 13th all-around title of Guise's collegiate career. Guise also won the meet's balance beam (9.90) and floor exercise (9.875) titles. Gator sophomore Sybil Stephenson claimed the first event title of her collegiate career Friday when she took the uneven bars title with a career-best score of 9.90. North Carolina State's Christi Newton of Jacksonville broke the string of Gator wins by taking the vault crown with a mark of 9.95.
 
Next up for the Gators is a road date at No. 1 Alabama on Jan. 27.
