Junior Bernice Mosby notched her 12th career double-double and third of the season, while leading the University of Florida women's basketball team past Delaware State, 71-47, Monday night in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
Mosby, who figured into every major category except steals, finished with 13 points and a season-high 15 rebounds to lead the Gators (4-2) to their fourth consecutive victory.
"This was a good win for our team," UF head coach Carolyn Peck said, "Especially with the quick turn-around time – only a day between playing Temple and Delaware State."
With the Gators leading from the get-go on a Mosby basket, the Hornets (1-3) refused to fold, always staying within striking distance before the Gators rattled off a 10-2 run to end the first half to take a commanding 37-18 halftime lead.
Junior Brittany Davis led the Gators in scoring with a season-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Davis was active in the paint throughout the game, creating fouls to earn two trips to the free-throw line to finish 4-of-4 from the stripe.
A determined Delaware State team was within 12 points with less than nine minutes to go in the game, before UF finished with a game-clinching 16-4 run. Mosby and Davis, the Gators' top scorers for the game, combined for 10 points during the run. Up to that point, the Hornets had outscored the Gators 25-18 in the second half.
"Delaware State has great tenacity and a toughness to them," Peck said. "We had to work tonight."
The Hornets were led by junior Najmah Fauntleroy, who scored a game-high 16 points while bringing down four rebounds. Fauntleroy came into the game averaging 12.7 points per game. Freshman Raquel Collier was the other Hornet in double-digits with 10 points while playing a game-high 35 minutes.
Using a half-court trap the majority of the game, UF forced 23 turnovers, eight of those coming on steals, while limiting the Hornets to 34.8 percent shooting for the game. The Gators were able to convert 21 points off Delaware State's turnovers.
Joining Mosby and Davis with double-digit scoring nights were seniors Tishona Gregory and Tamia Williams. Only one night after leading UF past Temple, the two seniors scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Gregory recorded a team-high five assists and two steals while Williams grabbed five rebounds coupled with three assists.
With 40 percent shooting for the night, it was a team effort for the Gators, with nine players on the roster having scored points while seeing double-digit playing time.
UF next plays its third game in five days, hosting Stetson at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
