Florida Soccer Loses 2-0 to Vanderbilt

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Florida soccer lost 2-0 in its Homecoming meeting with Vanderbilt Friday afternoon at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium.

Friday's Scoring:
Vanderbilt scored the opening goal in the 28th minute. UF goalkeeper Alexa Goldberg came off her line to try to stop a ball played into the middle of the Gator half. VU's Ella Eggleston got a touch just before Goldberg and the deflection traveled across the top of the box. Eggleston followed the ball, with her next touch getting deflected to the far top corner of the box. She caught up with the ball again, scoring on a left-footed shot to the far corner.

The Commodores scored again in the 66th minute. Abi Brighton brought the ball into the box, moving around a defender to then send a cross that a lofted Mia Gonzalez one-touched in at the far post.

For the match, VU outshot the Gators 15-10.

In goal today, UF's Goldberg made several high-flying saves. Goldberg's 10 saves today trails only her career-high 13 saves she posted in the 2021 opener at South Florida.

It is Goldberg's third appearance among Florida's all-time top 10 saves in a match performances:

Becky Burleigh Celebrated in Pre-Match Ceremony:
Just prior to Friday's match, Gator soccer's first coach, Becky Burleigh, was honored as tonight she is inducted into the Gator Athletics Hall of Fame as an honorary letterwinner.

Burleigh started the program in the 1995 season and in the team's fourth season, the Gators won the NCAA title. Here are some number from her 26 seasons leading the Gators:
  • 1998 NCAA Champions
  • 22 NCAA Championships' berths, including two College Cup appearances
  • 14 SEC team titles
  • 12 SEC Tournament titles

Coach Samantha Bohon Said:
"Credit to Vanderbilt. At the end of the day, for 90 minutes, we were not in control of that game but for maybe five minutes so you've got to give Vanderbilt credit. They were organized, player for player. We've got to figure out how to take what we can from this and get better and not have this compound.

"We've got crucial three games remaining. I'm just a little bit surprised that we got dominated so badly this late in the season, because we've been playing pretty well. Today, really wasn't good enough for us, and so we've got to be better." – Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon

Breast Cancer Awareness Match:
"I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge today was our pink game. Everybody, in some way or fashion, is touched by somebody that's been battling breast cancer. So I'd like to give a shout out to my friend, Lisa, who is going through this battle. Lisa, we're praying for you and hoping for the best." - – Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon
