No. 6 Auburn Takes 1-0 Win Over Florida

AUBURN, Ala. – A tying shot with less than 30 seconds remaining kicked off the cross bar, leaving the Gators disappointed with a hard-fought 1-0 loss at No. 6 Auburn Sunday afternoon at the Auburn Soccer Complex.

Sunday's Scoring:
Florida had the better opportunities in the opening half but couldn't find the scoring touch. UF outshot the Tigers 4-2 in the first 45 minutes.

The Tigers broke the scoreless tie in the 65th minute. Auburn's Anna Haddock's free kick from the top of Florida's defensive third was put among the scrum waiting in the box. Florida tried to clear the ball but AU's Jordyn Crosby got the touch that deflected off a Gator to score.

A late chance for the tying goal was created when Lena Bailey earned a Gator corner kick. The ball sent in was headed by Lauren McCloskey and came to Delaney Tellex. The angled ball from Tellex found Sophie White. With just 27 seconds left, White's shot hit the crossbar and kicked back into play where it was cleared by the Tigers.

Florida was without Super Senior Delaney Tauzel in the midfield today after she was injured in Thursday's 0-0 tie at No. 20 Kentucky. This afternoon, All-SEC first-team selection Daviana Vaka was sidelined in the 49th minute after colliding with AU's Olivia Woodson just inside the Tigers defensive half.

Sunday's game was the middle of a three-match stretch versus top-25 Southeastern Conference teams. Florida opened league play Thursday with a scoreless tie at No. 20 Kentucky. Next, Florida opens SEC home action versus Tennessee, ranked No. 23 by TopDrawerSoccer.

Coach Bohon Said:
"Really disappointed for our team today. We fought so hard for 90 minutes and the difference in the game is a heart-breaking own goal. And to hit the underside of the crossbar in the final seconds after having three really good looks at goal makes it even harder to swallow.

"But our Gators embraced the challenge of two road games to open the season against ranked teams. We walk away from the weekend knowing this team, despite the adversity, can compete to win with anyone." – Florida Head Coach Samantha Bohon
